Updated every 20 minutes from the space-weather forecast and the cloud forecast over four spots people actually go to. We will tell you when it is not worth leaving the hotel — that is the point of the page.
We read the space-weather forecast and the cloud over four spots people actually go to, then say plainly whether it is worth leaving the hotel tonight — and when it is not. This takes a moment.
Average cover over the dark hours. Lowest first — this is the number that decides your night.
Peak forecast activity per night. Useful if tonight is a write-off.
The strongest of the coming nights links straight to the hunts that run on it, once the forecast is in.

Nothing we sell is departing tonight. On a poor forecast that is often the operators’ own call.
135 northern lights tours from our operators, from €82 per person. We check tonight's departures live — a tour marked sold out has genuinely gone.

Cloud beats Kp. The number everyone quotes is Kp, a 0–9 scale of how disturbed the Earth's magnetic field is. Iceland is far enough north that Kp 2 is already enough. So the forecast that actually decides your night is the cloud one, which is why we show four locations instead of one national figure.
Dark matters too. You need real darkness, which Iceland only has from September to April. In midwinter that is sixteen hours a night; in early September it is about five.
Get away from streetlights. Even a good display washes out in central Reykjavík. Twenty minutes out is usually enough, and that is most of what a tour is buying you — that plus a driver who knows where the cloud gap is.
Nobody can promise you lights. If a page tells you the aurora is guaranteed, close it. What operators do offer is a free second attempt if your night comes up empty.
Iceland sits under the auroral oval, so Kp 2 to 3 is already enough for a visible display on a clear, dark night. Kp 5 and above can put lights overhead in Reykjavík itself. Cloud matters more than Kp here — a Kp 6 night under thick cloud shows you nothing, while Kp 2 under a clear sky away from town is often a decent green arc.
September to April. From May to August the sky never gets properly dark, so the aurora cannot be seen even when the solar activity is strong. Anyone selling a June northern lights tour is selling you a bus ride.
Any time it is dark, but activity is most often between 21:00 and 01:00. Tours usually leave between 20:00 and 22:00 and run three to four hours, because that is where the odds sit.
Most operators let you join another night free, usually within your stay or the season. That is their policy, not a promise from us, and the exact terms are on each tour page. Nobody honest guarantees the aurora.
On a marginal night, yes — a guide watches the cloud radar and drives to the gap, which can be an hour away in a direction you would not have guessed. On a clear, high-activity night you can do fine yourself, 20 minutes out of Reykjavík away from streetlights.
