About this experience
In 2 hours on an ATV you are able to see all the surroundings of Isafjordur in a great and fun way. This tour starts downtown Isafjordur. Our guide makes sure you know the bike before we take off. We drive through the town up towards the mountain, where we take the gravel road into the fjord. From there we drive down to the beach and again up another mountain. We drive old gravel roads, up to the top of the mountain Þverfjall on Breidadalsheidi From there you have an amazing panoramic view ower Skutulsfjordur and to the next fjords. On the way back we drive through the forrest in Tungudalur. Great way to experience Isafjordur and its surroundings with a different perspective. Photostops where you want 1-2 people on each bike Our bikes are automatic and easy to drive. All you need is a drivers licence. If you dont have much time and want to see it all -this is it.

Cancellation for this tour
Free cancellation until 2 days before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is storm-force wind — rain and mud do not cancel it. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Engjavegur ehf decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 2 days before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.
Who this is not for
- Not for families with children under 14 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.
Why we list it
Engjavegur ehf is one of 207 operators we work with — chosen for reliability, honest descriptions and how they treat guests when weather changes plans. We don't list everything; we list what we'd book ourselves. The six checks every operator passes →

If you want a truly unique experience I Highly recommend booking this tour. It is conveniently located at the cruise port. Just a few minute walk from the ship and the service was amazing. Sigridur is the owner and took care of every detail. Very friendly. You get full coveralls and gloves and helmet. Everything was very clean. The ATVs are excellent. The tour is for everyone. You do not need ATV experience. Our group enjoyed the ride through the green fjords. We drove through town saw sheep, horses, glacier lake, waterfalls and the photography is just stunning. If you are on a cruise and this is offered as an excursion, I strongly recommend booking directly to save the added fees. Check out their Facebook page and email. He is very responsive! For me it was $289 USD for my own ATV for approximately 2 hours drive with a couple stops for photos. Each ATV can accommodate 2 persons. One driver and One passenger behind. This was a perfect way to see a unique small area of Iceland.

Really fun thing to do when visiting this little town in Iceland! It was so much fun and the guide who took us today was really lovely. We went right up into the mountains and got some beautiful photos then he took us down to the waterfall and he was friendly and knowledgeable about Iceland. He was actually Czech but living in Iceland, he was a really lovely person. :) I would highly recommend this as an activity if you are visiting.

An exhilarating cruise excursion in Isafjordur! See the sights from above, breathe the crisp air and ride the rugged trails to the top of the mountain. Our 2-hr adventure starts from their warehouse walking distance from the port. We geared up in overalls, gloves and a helmet and rode the town streets reaching rugged terrain in no time. The summit stop was perfect for pictures. We also had a couple more stops down including an another picture stop at a waterfall. Recommended for a morning activity leaving time in the afternoon to discover the town.

We took the ATV safari today and it was absolutely fabulous. It was such a unique experience to have sunshine by the cruise terminal and then snow flurries at the summit! The scenery was incredible, the tour was very well-organised (great instruction for a novice quad-bike rider helped me tackle the ride with complete confidence) and our guide was fantastic. A highlight of our trip—highly recommend!

ATV & buggy — questions people ask
Where can you ride ATVs in Iceland?
In two very different places on this site. Near Reykjavík, the Hafnarfjörður lava fields, twenty minutes from town, host the ATV combos with caving, horses and whale watching (/experience/292/, /experience/1603/). In the Westfjords, Activity Tours runs one-hour and three-hour rides from Drangsnes and Djúpavík on the Strandir coast (/experience/1176229/, /experience/1167831/), with fjord views and almost no other traffic. The Westfjords rides are better; Reykjavík is easier to reach.
Do I need a driving licence to ride an ATV in Iceland?
Yes, a full valid car licence to drive one. Passengers ride behind the driver and do not need a licence, but minimum ages apply for both; check the tour page. Bring the physical licence card. Standard pricing puts two people on one ATV, with a single-rider supplement if you want your own. Buggies (/experience/7689/) are side-by-side and more car-like, if you are unsure about balancing an ATV.
What do I wear for an ATV tour?
Old clothes and closed shoes. The operator gives you a helmet, overalls, gloves and often a balaclava, because Icelandic tracks are mud in summer and slush in winter and you will get sprayed. Wear warm layers underneath; you are sitting still in the wind. Sunglasses or goggles help with grit. Leave anything white at the hotel. A shower afterwards is not optional.
Is ATV riding in Iceland dangerous?
It carries real risk, which is why the licence rules exist. You ride in a line behind a guide at a set pace on marked tracks, so the danger is mostly in overconfidence on loose gravel or steep sections. Follow the guide's speed and keep your feet on the footrests. Travel insurance that covers motorised activities is worth checking before you book; some standard policies exclude ATVs.
