About this experience
The Snowmobiling Northern light tour
This is a snowmobiling tour, however unlike normal snowmobiling tours we now travel into the night. Snowmobiling in dark is actually very easy due to good lights on the snowmobile. In some conditions it is more favorable to drive during darkness to avoid “snow blind” conditions. During the the tour you will travel trough various landscapes of Mývatn nature reserve. Frozen wetlands, birch forests( woodlands/scrubs). We drive out away from any light pollution, off the beaten track, turn of the snowmobiles and enjoy the darkness and hopefully if we are lucky we might see Northern Lights
This is a small group tour with maximum 16 passengers in each group.
Snowmobiling.
In Mývatn, snowmobiling is our favourite way of traveling trough the rough arctic conditions. Our guides grew up riding snowmobile on they’re farms. For us, Snowmobiling is a part of our lifestyle, we love to share our passion for snowmobiling and allow our guests to experience the incredible freedom that a snowmobile provides
Itinerary:
You meet your guide, who will help you find helmets and overalls fitting your size. We go over all safety features you need to keep in mind and show you all the tricks about driving and operating a snowmobile. Just before we go, your guide will go over the route and how we drive in a single formation at a safe speed.
Your guide will then take you on a one-hour snowmobile tour with a few stops to admire the landscape and hopefully see Northern lights. Driving a snowmobile through a vast landscape of volcanoes and the contrast between the black lava and white snow is an experience of a lifetime.
Good to know:
All drivers need to present a valid driver’s license and please note that operation period is dependent on season. Pre booking is required. Keep in mind that steering the snowmobile is significantly harder with a passenger on the back so we recommend single rides for beginners. A signed liability waiver is required prior to all tour departures. Your safety is our first priority so itinerary might be altered due to bad weather or road conditions, we might have to cancel or reschedule the tour if weather or other conditions are not in our favor. All cancelled tours, on our behalf, are 100% refunded.

Cancellation for this tour
Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a solid cloud forecast — most operators call it by late afternoon and let you rebook on a clearer night free of charge. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Geo Travel decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Why this one and not the cheaper one?
The nearest cheaper Akureyri Northern Light Tour from The Traveling Viking is €81 — €138 less. Here is every difference we can actually measure.
| Geo Travel · €219 | The Traveling Viking · €81 | |
|---|---|---|
| How long it runs | 2 hours | 2.5 hours |
| Getting there | You make your own way | Picks you up |
| Changing your mind | Free until 24 h before | Free until departure |
The cheaper tour is ahead on more of what we can measure. The €138 is worth it only if free cancellation up to 24 h before is what you want.
Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.
Who this is not for
- Not for families with children under 12 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
- Not available in summer; the operator runs it roughly September to April.
Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.
Why we list it

Rúna was an outstanding tour guide. He brought incredible energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude from start to finish. It was a very long day, but his engaging commentary and great sense of humor made the time fly by. He confidently navigated some truly adventurous conditions, including river crossings and driving through snow, all while making us feel safe and comfortable. Along the way, he shared fascinating stories about Icelandic history, geology, and culture that made every stop even more meaningful. This was an unforgettable experience, and Rúna played a huge part in making it so memorable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Iceland.

The Lofthellir ice cave tour was exceptional and includes a hike across a lava field before going into the cave. Our guide Anton is local and was incredibly knowledgeable about the geology and formations as well as the ecosystem. This is one of my favorite things I’ve done in Iceland.

We had a great time on our buggy ATV tour with Alejandro this morning! We enjoyed the buggy instruction, exciting tour, and interesting lessons about Icelandic geology. We already know this will be one of the highlights of our already eventful vacation to Iceland. Highly recommend!!

- Best Northern Lights Tour in Iceland (2026): 5 PicksThe northern lights tours we would book ourselves from Reykjavík and Akureyri, by minibus, super jeep and boat, with real prices and honest odds.
- Best Snowmobile Tour in Iceland (2026): 4 PicksThe snowmobile tours we would book ourselves: Langjökull from Gullfoss, the same glacier with Reykjavík pickup, and Eyjafjallajökull on the South Coast.
- Northern lights from Akureyri: which tourAkureyri is a good northern lights base: dark sky 15 minutes out and a second weather system. Book the €122 classic tour; skip the pricier 4x4 unless it snows.

Northern lights — questions people ask
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Iceland?
September to April, when the nights are dark enough. Within that, late September to March gives the longest dark hours, and the equinox months, September and March, often have active skies. There are no lights in June or July; the sky never gets dark. Anyone selling you a June lights tour is selling you a bus ride. Give yourself at least three nights, because clouds, not the aurora, are the usual reason people miss them.
Are the northern lights guaranteed on a tour?
No. Nobody can promise them, and we will not. Two things have to line up: a clear sky and solar activity. Guides check the cloud forecast at vedur.is and drive to gaps, which is the real value of a tour over standing outside your hotel. What most operators do promise is a free second attempt if the lights do not show. Check the exact retry policy on the tour page, because the number of retries and the validity period vary.
Is a northern lights bus tour or a boat tour better?
Bus, if you want the best odds. A minibus can drive an hour inland to find a clear patch; a boat stays in Faxaflói and sees whatever sky is over Reykjavík. Boats are shorter, about two hours, and pleasant with hot chocolate, and Reykjavik Sailors' cruise (/experience/6637/) includes a free retry. For a serious hunt, a small-group minibus like BusTravel's (/experience/150646/) or a 4x4 tour (/experience/1088067/) is the better bet.
Can I see the northern lights from Reykjavík itself?
Yes, on strong nights. The city is small and the sky over the sea to the north is fairly dark. Grótta lighthouse at the western tip and the Ægisíða shoreline are the usual spots, twenty minutes' walk from the centre. On average nights the street lights drown out a faint aurora, which is why tours drive out. If the forecast shows high activity and clear sky, walk to Grótta first and save the tour money.
