About this experience

Save money and space in the luggage and rent the outdoor clothes you need in Iceland.

These hiking crampons are a step up from the city crampons. If you want to be sure foot as you walk close the waterfalls or once you get into the countryside, then these are the crampons for you.

The hiking crampons are a great choice for deep winter, December - March.

They are not meant for glacier hikes.

Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is wind above the treeline and river levels after rain — the guide decides on the day. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1IcelandCover Outdoor Clothing Rental decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Who this is not for

  • Not a good fit if you want a relaxed day: 1 day is a long time on the road, most of it spent getting there and back.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

Travel Tip: If you’re planning an Iceland trip from Florida, you can skip the endless Amazon returns. 😂 After what felt like 20 failed clothing orders, I finally rented our gear through IcelandCover—and it ended up being one of the smartest decisions we made for our trip. My husband and I both rented their Summer Package, and I loved that we could customize it to fit our needs. I get cold just thinking about cold weather, while my husband could probably wear shorts in Iceland! I opted for a few warmer pieces, while he stuck with their standard summer recommendations. The flexibility was fantastic. We rented waterproof pants, jackets, beanies, neck gaiters, and gloves. Everything was high quality, comfortable, and performed exactly the way we hoped. We stayed warm and dry through glacier hikes, ice caves, windy viewpoints, and even hiking behind waterfalls. I also completely fell in love with the Didriksons brand and may have found a new outdoor clothing obsession! Perfect blend of style and performance. One thing that really stood out was the customer service. Pickup was incredibly easy and fast. Everything was waiting and ready for us upon arrival. We quickly tried everything on and were out exploring Iceland in a blink. The staff even gave us recommendations for places to visit that weren’t even on our itinerary. We ended up adding several of their suggestions, and they turned out to be some of our favorite stops. ⚠️ Good to Know If you’re planning lots of outdoor adventures, especially during rainy weather, be sure to ask for waterproof gloves. We had one particularly wet excursion day, and the gloves we received weren’t designed for that kind of weather. I’d also recommend returning your gear directly to IcelandCover’s main location if possible. We paid extra to use one of their hotel partner drop-off locations, and unfortunately that experience didn’t go smoothly and delayed our Blue Lagoon reservation. Thankfully, IcelandCover stepped in immediately, answered the phone, and helped us get everything sorted out. Their customer service made all the difference. ⭐ Family Travel Tip As a Florida family, I cannot recommend this enough. Renting our gear saved a TON of luggage space, eliminated the stress of buying expensive clothing we’d rarely use back home, and ensured we actually had quality gear that kept us warm and dry. We’ll be bringing our four kids on our next trip to Iceland, and without a doubt, we’ll be renting from IcelandCover again for the entire family. 🔄 Would We Return? Absolutely—100%. Looking back, renting from IcelandCover was one of the smartest planning decisions we made before our trip. The quality was outstanding, the flexibility was appreciated, and the customer service was excellent. If you’re traveling to Iceland from a warmer climate, save yourself the stress and rent the gear. You’ll spend less time worrying about what to pack and more time enjoying Iceland.

I can't thank them enough. The airline lost my luggage upon arrival, and this shop was recommended to me. It was a lifesaver! Located right in downtown Reykjavik, the staff were incredibly nice and friendly. I was able to rent a perfect-fitting parka that allowed me to enjoy my trip trouble-free. They have everything at very modest prices (boots, pants, gloves...), though I only needed the coat. Returns were super quick and easy. Highly recommended!

I found iceland cover online before our iceland trip in February. Coming from Texas we had no cold weather gear and the thought of buying and packing it was ridiculous. Iceland cover answered all of my questions ahead of time quickly. Some of the best customer service I’ve had anywhere. The gear was delivered on time and waiting for us. Drop off was easy. For the money and convenience this is a no brainer. Shout out to davio, andrea and marina for making our Iceland adventure warm and fabulous!

I was skeptical about renting outdoor gear before coming to Iceland but I’m an Iceland Cover super fan now. I put Iceland Cover’s gear to the absolute test during a brutal winter storm, and I honestly couldn’t be more impressed. I was out in full kit — jacket, pants, boots, beanie, neck gaiter, crampons — and not once did I feel the cold creeping in or the wet seeping through. The jacket was the real standout. Wind was howling, snow was driving sideways, and I stayed completely insulated and dry. The fit was comfortable enough that I could move freely without feeling like I was wrapped in a sleeping bag. The pants complemented it perfectly. They sealed everything together like they were made to work as a system (because they were). And the boots? My feet were the last thing on my mind out there, which is exactly what you want. Warm, waterproof, and grippy on slick surfaces — I didn’t slip, I didn’t soak through, and I didn’t suffer. What also sets Iceland Cover apart is their customer service. They were responsive and genuinely helpful every step of the way — the kind of support that makes you feel like a valued customer, not just another order number. If you’re on the fence about renting quality outdoor gear, let a winter storm be your deciding factor. Iceland Cover didn’t just meet my expectations — they blew them away. Do yourself a favor and use Iceland Covers. Your welcome.

Hiking & trekking — questions people ask

When can you hike in Landmannalaugar?

Late June to September. The highland roads to Landmannalaugar are closed by snow the rest of the year, and the opening date shifts with the weather each summer. In season, day tours from Reykjavík (/experience/16823/) run about fourteen hours with a three- to five-hour guided hike and a soak in the hot river. If you have your own 4x4, the meet-on-location hike (/experience/254326/) skips the bus.

How hard is the Laugavegur trek?

Moderate to hard. It is 55 kilometres over four days from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, with river crossings, snow patches in July and weather that can turn to sleet in August. You do not need technical skills, but you need to carry a pack and walk five to eight hours a day. Guided treks (/experience/738812/) handle logistics and camping gear; the luggage transfer (/experience/1036525/) lets self-guided walkers carry a day pack only.

Can you hike to the volcano near Reykjavík?

Yes, when it is safe. The Reykjanes eruption sites at Fagradalsfjall and around Grindavík have drawn hikers since 2021, and guided tours (/experience/629086/, /experience/620679/) follow the routes the Civil Protection authority has open. If there is an active eruption, access changes daily and tours adapt or pause. The lava is usually cooled and crusted; you see fresh black rock and steam, not flowing lava. Wear boots; the ground is rough.

What should I pack for a day hike in Iceland?

Waterproof jacket and trousers, not a poncho; the wind will shred it. Hiking boots with ankle support, wool or synthetic layers, hat, gloves, sunglasses and a packed lunch with two litres of water. In the highlands add a warm mid-layer even in July. Guides carry first aid and route knowledge, not your rain gear. Cotton jeans and trainers are the most common reason people have a miserable day.
