This was an amazing experience! The guide we had were funny, kept our spirit up and was a really good educator. Very interesting and well worth the trip. We were there at 6pm, and we were 8 ppl waling the cave. We went in about 800 meters. The cave is quite big! There were a part, about 5/7 meters where you had to bend down a bit, but other then that, not claustrophobic at all. You get to see alot of interesting things, learn a lot about the area, the cave, how things are made and even tutch and hold different things from the cave. It is a bit cold, so yes, do have warm clothes if you are not used to it beeing cold. The trip/walk takes around 1,5 hours and you don't have to be fit to walk the walk. PS: put all your valuables and rings in a pocket, you dont want to loose it in here. Not everything is easy to retrieve. If you are thinking about it, just DO IT!

We had a great adventure exploring Víðgelmir Cave. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and explained the cave’s history and geology in an interesting way. The cave is impressively long, with spectacular lava formations and unique geological features. It was a fascinating experience and definitely worth visiting if you’re interested in Iceland’s volcanic landscape. Highly recommended!

The Cave Vídgelmir is a worthwhile stop while visiting Iceland and a fascinating way to experience the country’s volcanic geology up close. This privately owned attraction offers guided tours through an impressive lava cave, and no caving experience is required. Helmets with lights are provided, and much of the route follows a wooden boardwalk, making the experience very accessible if you can easily navigate many stairways. Our guide conducted the tour in English and was both knowledgeable and entertaining. There is also a small interpretive center with a few displays and restrooms. A very interesting experience overall, especially for anyone interested in Iceland’s unique geology. Highly recommended!

What an amazing experience exploring the lava cave! The tour was fascinating from start to finish, and the cave itself is truly impressive with an incredible atmosphere. It was such a special opportunity to learn more about the cave, its origins, and the natural forces that shaped it over time. A special thank you to Jan for making the tour so engaging, informative, and fun. His knowledge about the cave, it's geological formation, and it's history was outstanding, and he shared everything with such enthusiasm that every minute was interesting. He also had a great sense of humor, which made the experience even more enjoyable. If you’re visiting, I highly recommend taking this tour!

Questions about booking The Cave

Is it cheaper to book The Cave directly?

No. We sell The Cave's tours at the price they set, through their own booking system, so the seat costs the same here as on their site. What you get here in addition is one checkout for every tour in your trip, whoever runs it, and one place to turn if plans change.

Does The Cave pick up from hotels?

None of the 3 The Cave tours we sell includes a hotel pickup. Each tour page gives the meeting point — they start from Borgarnes, Reykjavík.

What is The Cave's cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. The exact window is printed on every tour page and in your confirmation, and a refund goes back to the card you paid with.

Where do The Cave tours start?

Their departures we sell start from Borgarnes, Reykjavík. Check the map on each tour page for the exact meeting point.

Which languages are The Cave tours guided in?

Their tours are guided in English, Icelandic, Spanish and Polish, according to their own product records. Where a tour is audio-guided rather than led by a person, the tour page says so.

Is there a minimum age on The Cave tours?

Yes, on 1 of their 3 tours, the lowest being 12. The rest set no minimum. The planner filters by your youngest traveller if you give it ages.

How is The Cave rated?

4.6 out of 5 on Google from 1699 reviews of the company. That is the operator's score, not a rating of any one tour; our own guests' reviews of their tours, where we have them, are shown on this page and on the tour pages.

Not sure which of these fits your dates? The planner checks real departures and builds the day around them.
