What moves the price

Length and what is on board. A harbour sightseeing hour is cheap; sea angling with a barbecue or a longer fjord cruise costs more.

What the hotel pickup costs you

We can put a number on this rather than guess. Across 58 boat tours , the ones you drive to yourself have a middle price of €158, and the ones that collect you from your hotel have a middle price of €149 — 5% less.

The gap is small here, so pickup is usually worth taking. Private and charter tours are left out of this comparison, because their price reflects exclusivity rather than transport.

Medians across 47 meet-on-location and 11 pickup tours, per person, day tours only.

The cheapest boat tours we'd actually book

Cheapest is not always right — a €50 saving hurts less than a wasted day. These are the low-price options we'd still put our name to.

Our honest take

If a boat tour is the thing you came to Iceland for, pay the middle price rather than the floor — the difference usually buys a smaller group and a guide with time for you. If it's a nice-to-have on a day you're already busy, the cheapest option does the job. Either way, book it for a day early in your trip: if weather cancels it, you'll have another day to try again. Most of these run in South Coast, North Iceland, Reykjavík, Vatnajökull & Jökulsárlón.

Boat tours prices: questions people ask

How much does a boat tour cost in Iceland?

We sell 81 boat tours from 27 Icelandic operators. The cheapest is €55 per person, the typical price is €153, and the top end is €2,854. Length and what is on board. A harbour sightseeing hour is cheap; sea angling with a barbecue or a longer fjord cruise costs more.

Is there a booking fee?

No. You pay the operator's own price and we take a commission out of it, so booking here costs the same as booking direct — with one checkout if you book several tours.

Can I get a refund if I cancel?

On most of these, yes: cancel more than 24 hours before and you get the full amount back. The exact rule belongs to the operator and is shown on each tour page before you pay.

Where do boat tours leave from in Reykjavík?

The Old Harbour, on Ægisgarður pier, about five minutes' walk from most downtown hotels and ten from Hallgrímskirkja. Elding and Reykjavik Sailors both have ticket offices there. Whale, puffin, sea-angling and northern-lights boats all use the same area. Arrive thirty minutes before departure to check in. The Viðey ferry (/experience/1539/) leaves from the same harbour in summer and from Skarfabakki the rest of the year.

Is the Jökulsárlón boat tour worth it?

Yes, if you are already at the lagoon. A Zodiac gets you among the icebergs and close to the glacier edge in a way the shore cannot, and the combined glacier hike and Zodiac day (/experience/716547/) is the best full day in the southeast. Boats run in the warmer months only; check the tour page for dates. It is not worth a fourteen-hour day trip from Reykjavík just for the boat.
