Jökulsárlón is worth two days and a bad idea as one
Short answer
Worth it, with conditions
Worth it if you sleep in the southeast; a genuinely poor day if you take the 13-hour return coach from Reykjavík in winter.
The short version
Worth it, with conditions. Worth it if you sleep in the southeast; a genuinely poor day if you take the 13-hour return coach from Reykjavík in winter.
We hold 14 day tours here from 8 operators, median €205 a person, cheapest €57.
Cheaper alternative: The South Coast day tour stops at Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara and Vík for about half the driving and a lower price. If icebergs are the point and time is short, Fjallsárlón next door is quieter and closer.
Worth it if
You are driving the ring road or have booked a two-day tour with a night in Vík or Höfn.
You want the icebergs and the black beach opposite, and you are prepared to build the trip around them.
You are going between November and March and want to add an ice cave, which is right there.
Not worth it if
You only have one day and no car. Ten of the thirteen hours are a coach seat.
You are travelling in December or January. You will arrive in half-light and leave in the dark.
You get carsick or you are travelling with small children. This is the longest day tour anyone sells here.
What you are actually paying for

How far is Jökulsárlón from Reykjavík?+
About 375 km each way, five hours in good conditions and longer in winter. That is why every one-day tour there runs to twelve or thirteen hours.
Is the boat on the glacier lagoon worth it?+
It is about 40 minutes on the water among the icebergs, and it runs roughly May to October. Worth adding if you are already there; not a reason on its own to make the journey.
What is Diamond Beach?+
The black sand beach directly across the road, where icebergs that have drifted out of the lagoon wash back ashore. It is free, it takes twenty minutes, and most people rate it above the lagoon itself.
