The Blue Lagoon is worth it if you treat it as an arrival stop
Short answer
Worth it, with conditions
Worth it on the way in from Keflavík or out to your flight; a poor use of a day if you travel out from Reykjavík and back for a two-hour soak.
The short version
Worth it, with conditions. Worth it on the way in from Keflavík or out to your flight; a poor use of a day if you travel out from Reykjavík and back for a two-hour soak.
We hold 11 day tours here from 7 operators, median €183 a person, cheapest €25.
Cheaper alternative: A Reykjavík city pool costs about €8, has hot tubs and a steam room, and is what Icelanders actually do after work. If you want a lagoon with a landscape, the Secret Lagoon on the Golden Circle is roughly a third of the price.
Worth it if
You land with half a day before check-in, or leave on an evening flight with a free morning.
You want the version with the towels, the bar, the mask and the changing rooms that work, and you accept paying for it.
You are travelling as a couple or a family who would rather do one comfortable thing than three cold ones.
Not worth it if
You are staying in Reykjavík and would be making a special trip: it is 50 minutes each way for two hours in water.
You want quiet. Slots are timed and full, and the lagoon is busy from opening to close.
Your day has no slack. It sits beside Grindavík in an active volcanic zone and has closed at short notice since 2023.
What you are actually paying for
Admission is the most expensive of any lagoon in the country and is booked as a timed slot, separately from any transfer. Almost everything we sell here is the transfer, or a transfer with admission bundled in — so compare the tour price against admission plus a bus, not against admission alone.
Across our own contracted catalogue, lagoons & spas day tours run to a median of €183 a person, with the cheapest we hold at €25, from 7 operators. Private and per-vehicle products are excluded, because mixing them into a per-person figure makes it meaningless.
In an active volcanic area
The Blue Lagoon sits beside Grindavík, where eruptions have repeatedly forced it to close at short notice since 2023 — sometimes for weeks. Book it, but do not make it the only thing you have planned for that day, and check their own site the morning you go. Operators refund or rebook when it shuts, and so do we.

Is the Blue Lagoon better than Sky Lagoon?+
Different days rather than different quality. The Blue Lagoon is 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport and works as an arrival or departure stop; Sky Lagoon is 15 minutes from downtown Reykjavík and works as a city evening. Prices are close. If you have an airport gap, take the Blue Lagoon; if you do not, take Sky Lagoon and save the transfer.
Can you visit the Blue Lagoon without booking ahead?+
No. Entry is by timed slot and high-season days sell out weeks in advance, as does the period around New Year. Book the slot first and the transfer second.
What happens if it closes because of an eruption?+
It has closed at short notice repeatedly since 2023, sometimes for weeks. Operators refund or rebook when it shuts and so do we — but the day around it is yours to rescue, which is why we would not build a departure day around it if the flight is tight.
