Silfra is worth it for the visibility and nothing else about it
Short answer
Worth it
Worth it if you understand what you are buying — thirty to forty minutes floating down a cold, empty, glass-clear fissure between two continental plates, with no fish and no coral.
The short version
Worth it. Worth it if you understand what you are buying — thirty to forty minutes floating down a cold, empty, glass-clear fissure between two continental plates, with no fish and no coral.
We hold 18 day tours here from 3 operators, median €178 a person, cheapest €100.
Cheaper alternative: Walking the Almannagjá rift at Þingvellir costs nothing and shows you the same geology from above. Our Silfra snorkelling versus diving guide covers the upgrade question.
Worth it if
You are doing the Golden Circle anyway: Silfra is inside Þingvellir national park.
Water clarity is the appeal. Visibility runs to a hundred metres and there is nothing else like it.
You can handle cold water on your face for half an hour — the drysuit covers everything else.
Not worth it if
You want marine life. There is almost none. This is geology in water.
You are not comfortable floating face-down in 2°C water in a drysuit you were fitted into an hour earlier.
You are short of time and money in the same trip: it is one of the dearer half-days here.
What you are actually paying for
Drysuit, undersuit, hood, gloves, mask and guide are included, and that kit is most of the price. Diving costs substantially more than snorkelling and requires a drysuit certification — the snorkel version needs no qualification at all.
Across our own contracted catalogue, silfra snorkelling & diving day tours run to a median of €178 a person, with the cheapest we hold at €100, from 3 operators. Private and per-vehicle products are excluded, because mixing them into a per-person figure makes it meaningless.
The cheaper thing to do instead
Walking the Almannagjá rift at Þingvellir costs nothing and shows you the same geology from above. Our Silfra snorkelling versus diving guide covers the upgrade question.

How about starting the day with snorkeling Silfra, a freshwater fissure and then "fly" around beautiful Iceland? Then we recommend the combination of Snorkeling and Golden Fly Over Iceland adventure combo.
Worth it if you understand what you are buying — thirty to forty minutes floating down a cold, empty, glass-clear fissure between two continental plates, with no fish and no coral.
Do you need to be able to swim to snorkel Silfra?+
Operators require basic water confidence and most set a minimum age and a maximum height and weight for the drysuits. The suit floats you, so it is closer to drifting than swimming, but nobody should book it if open water makes them panic.
How cold is the water in Silfra?+
About 2°C all year — it is glacial meltwater filtered through lava for decades, which is also why it is so clear. The drysuit keeps you dry everywhere except your face and hands.
